Introduction

Machine Dynamics aims to provide students with a foundation and knowledge of dynamics applicable to mechanics and machines. This includes an appreciation of the importance of machine dynamics in Engineering systems and the basic engineering tools to analyse the behaviour of mechanical systems for the purposes of engineering design. The course material is designed specifically for mechatronic and mechanical engineering applications.

Lecture 1 x 2 Hours Weekly
Science Laboratory 3 x 2 Hours Semester
Tutorial 1 x 2 Hours Weekly
Workshop 1 x 1 Hours Weekly

Unit Learning Outcomes

  • 1 apply fundamental theories of mechanics such as vector functions and coordinate systems (such as x-y, n-t and r-theta) to calculate the motion of single and multibody systems, GC1, GC3
  • 2 analyse the effect of inertia on machine dynamic behaviour by determining the inertia of a typical object through calculations and innovative measurements, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC6
  • 3 model and analyse simple machine equipment to make approximate forces, torques, power and the resulting dynamic motions, GC1, GC2, GC3
  • 4 communicate effectively through a written report by discussing current applications, experimental results and conclusions of a laboratory experiment, GC3, GC6
  • 5 critcially relfect on the connetion of theory and experimental data obtained through demonstrated laboratory experimentation expertise, GC1, GC3, GC4, GC6

Course Learning Outcomes

  • 2 Solve complex Industrial and Systems engineering problems of industrial and societal significance through the application of discipline-specific and integrated bodies of knowledge, design and sustainability principles
  • 5 Select and use current and emerging technologies to develop and communicate effective and innovative engineering solutions to complex problems

Assessment Breakdown

Recent Unit Changes & Response to Student Feedback

Students are encouraged to provide feedback through student surveys (such as Insight and the annual Student Experience Survey) and interactions with teaching staff.

Listed below are some recent changes to the unit as a result of student feedback.

Fourier Series has been added as Lecture 12 in Semester week 13. This is the exact content from lecture 7 of MATH2012.
