Syllabus
Students undertake a significant research project that either develops new knowledge or addresses an industrial and systems engineering problem of interest. Students are free to choose from a range of projects offered by the faculty members as well as by external partners. The theory units that they learn in the classroom provide them with existing knowledge in the field whereas the undergraduate project provides them with an opportunity to demonstrate their inventiveness, degree of effort and self-management skills. In this unit students will: carry out and complete the research project planned and commenced in Industrial and Systems Engineering Research Project 1. Projects involve the application of engineering research methodologies, including analytical, numerical or experimental investigation or design, which is carried out over a period of one year. The students submit their project work in the form of an undergraduate thesis at the end of 2 consecutive semesters, and deliver their research findings in an oral form to their peers and staff in a project research seminar.Unit Learning Outcomes
- 1 manage the continuation and completion of a significant openended industrial and systems engineering research project, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC4, GC6
- 2 deploy an appropriate combination of research, design and analytical methods in the solution of engineering problems, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC4, GC6
- 3 apply and integrate crossdisciplinary learning skills, knowledge and creativity in the solution of a novel and complex engineering problem, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC4
- 4 apply advanced communication and interpretative skills in written, drawing and graphical forms together with those of data synthesis and visualisation, GC1, GC3, GC6
- 5 justify engineering approaches and research methodologies, and evaluate project outcomes in both written and oral forms, GC2, GC3, GC4, GC6
Course Learning Outcomes
- 2 Solve complex Industrial and Systems engineering problems of industrial and societal significance through the application of discipline-specific and integrated bodies of knowledge, design and sustainability principles
- 4 Apply systems thinking for innovative solutions to global Industrial and Systems engineering challenges, discern knowledge and undertake applied research in a discipline of Industrial and Systems engineering
- 5 Select and use current and emerging technologies to develop and communicate effective and innovative engineering solutions to complex problems
