Syllabus

Students undertake a significant research project that either develops new knowledge or addresses an engineering problem of interest. Students are free to choose from a range of projects offered by the faculty members as well as by external partners. In this unit students will: identify a problem, propose and plan a solution that meets the requirements, do a literature review to investigate existing solutions, make design decisions and assumptions to develop their solution, keep a logbook, and submit a written progress report at the end of semester. Projects involve engineering research methodologies, including analytical, numerical or experimental investigation or design, carried out over a period of one year. The students submit their final project work in the form of an undergraduate thesis at the end of the subsequent unit Industrial and Systems Engineering Research Project 2.

Unit Learning Outcomes

  • 1 identify, plan and commence a research project that leads to the solution of a significant open ended industrial and systems engineering problem, GC1, GC2, GC4, GC6
  • 2 deploy an appropriate combination of research, design and analytical methods in the solution of engineering problems, GC2, GC3, GC4
  • 3 apply and integrate crossdisciplinary learning skills, knowledge and creativity in the solution of a novel and complex engineering problem, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC4
  • 4 apply advanced communication and interpretative skills in written, drawing and graphical forms together with those of data synthesis and visualisation, GC1, GC2, GC3
  • 5 reflect upon and critically review project work through the production of a written progress report, GC1, GC2

Course Learning Outcomes

  • 4 Apply systems thinking for innovative solutions to global Industrial and Systems engineering challenges, discern knowledge and undertake applied research in a discipline of Industrial and Systems engineering
  • 5 Select and use current and emerging technologies to develop and communicate effective and innovative engineering solutions to complex problems
  • 6 Demonstrate lifelong learning habits, teamwork and leadership abilities, project management skills, and the ability to identify opportunities for career-wide professional growth, necessary for advancing a career in engineering and beyond
