Introduction
Welcome to Ethics and Sustainability in Engineering S2 2025. We hope that you will find this a worthwhile and stimulating unit in understanding the enormous value and potential for sustainability application and leadership in the engineering profession. Sustainable development combines economic development, social advancement and environmental protection and is widely recognised by the public, private and civic sectors as one of the key challenges for the 21st century. The unit deals with the contribution of engineering to the development and implementation of sustainable solutions.

- 1 demonstrate and interpret the basic theories of engineering ethics, life cycle engineering and sustainable development, GC1, GC4
- 2 apply and communicate key methods and tools for sustainability engineering from social, economic, and environmental perspectives, GC1, GC4
- 3 reflect on the role and ethical responsibilities of the Profession of Engineering in addressing the conflicting challenges of improving human wellbeing and planetary sustainability, GC4, GC5

- 3 Make decisions related to the design and implementation of solutions to engineering problems in a safe, ethical, and climate-responsible manner adhering to legal and professional standards and through respectful partnerships with local First Peoples and other diverse cultures as globally responsible citizens
- 4 Apply systems thinking for innovative solutions to global Industrial and Systems engineering challenges, discern knowledge and undertake applied research in a discipline of Industrial and Systems engineering
