Introduction

This unit is concerned with the analysis and design of feedback dynamic systems. Topics covered include modelling of physical processes from physical principles; analysis of the stability and performance of open and closed-loop linear systems; basic control designs using proportional, integral and derivative controllers, lead and lag controllers and other basic linear processes.
Science Laboratory 1 x 2 Hours Fortnightly
Tutorial 1 x 1 Hours Weekly
Workshop 1 x 1 Hours Weekly
Seminar 1 x 3 Hours Weekly

Unit Learning Outcomes

  • 1 demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of linear dynamic systems, including their analysis, behaviour, and the application of feedback control principles to achieve desired system performance, GC1, GC3, GC6
  • 2 simulate and verify the performance of simple control systems by integrating theoretical principles with practical implementations, ensuring that the simulated and verified system meets specified performance criteria, GC1, GC3, GC6
  • 3 design, implement, and evaluate the performance of simple control systems to achieve specified performance criteria and address real-world constraints, GC1, GC2, GC6
  • 4 develop, implement, and evaluate continuous-time control systems by applying classical design techniques and appropriate transformation methods, GC1, GC3, GC6

Course Learning Outcomes

  • 1 Demonstrate a conceptual understanding of fundamental science, mathematics, data analytics, information science, and computing underpinning the broad field of engineering
  • 2 Solve complex Industrial and Systems engineering problems of industrial and societal significance through the application of discipline-specific and integrated bodies of knowledge, design and sustainability principles
  • 5 Select and use current and emerging technologies to develop and communicate effective and innovative engineering solutions to complex problems

Recent Unit Changes & Response to Student Feedback

Students are encouraged to provide feedback through student surveys (such as Insight and the annual Student Experience Survey) and interactions with teaching staff.

Listed below are some recent changes to the unit as a result of student feedback.

Past exam made available to students.
