Introduction

This unit covers three important topics in Operations Research: dynamic programming, queuing theory and discrete event simulation. The unit provides students with mathematical theory, simulation techniques and hand-on programming experience for solving dynamical and stochastic decision-making problems.
Lecture 1 x 2 Hours Weekly
Tutorial 1 x 1 Hours Weekly
Workshop 1 x 1 Hours Weekly

Unit Learning Outcomes

  • 1 apply key elements of Stochastic Modelling to dynamic systems, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC6
  • 2 apply dynamic programming concepts to model and optimise a range of industrial optimisation problems, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC6
  • 3 analyse, model and optimise queuing systems, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC6
  • 4 analyse, develop and implement simulation models, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC6
  • 5 apply and adapt models to industrial case studies, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC6

Course Learning Outcomes

  • 1 Demonstrate a conceptual understanding of fundamental science, mathematics, data analytics, information science, and computing underpinning the broad field of engineering
